Silicone Rings: Not just for cheapskates
The reason for the title. My husband is not a cheapskate. He bought me a very sparkly diamond that I adore. I bought myself the silicone ring. Just wanted to clarify that. ;)
I’ve been getting a lot of comments on my silicone wedding band lately including the above mentioned dig. But I think it warrants obsessing over because… It’s awesome!
So. For the fans of the wrap up there you go. Look into silicone rings people. They’re worth considering.
But now for the long and detailed opinion of me.
I had surgery on my hand about 6 months after we were married. That was traumatizing in and of itself but I was a newlywed and all hyped up on the fact that I had a pretty ring to wear. However, now I couldn’t wear my ring. At all. The surgery was on my left pinky and wrist and having anything touch my hand was agony. I went a year without being able to wear my rock because the prongs would dig into the incision and, later, the scar and I just couldn’t handle it. My husband was a great sport and it didn’t really bug him but I was frustrated. I found a cheap ring that was smooth so it didn’t dig in as much but the hard metal was still difficult to deal with when the scar tissue would flare up.
Five years later I was in the same boat. The tumor they removed was back and I needed surgery again. This one had complications because I apparently can’t do anything by halves. I was determined not go an entire year and a half without wearing a ring again but metal wasn’t an option. Things were so much painful this time around and so I thought I’d give these rings a try.
I ordered some and I haven’t looked back. It has never bugged my hand. After one of the follow up surgeries I was able to wear the ring next to the bandage and it never rubbed or pressed the wrong way. It’s thin enough that it just feels like a part of my finger and soft enough that it gives with my movements.
I took one on vacation and loved it because I wasn’t worried about losing my nice ring in a place I would never find it again.
Also, since they’re so cheap I got a pack of them and now I can switch out colors and just have fun with them. My husband also ordered some and he wears them when we leave town or when he’s exercising. My dad soon followed suit. He hasn’t worn a ring in years because he can’t at his job. My mom is thinking about getting some as well. They’re both medical professionals and rings are difficult to handle in places where you need to be very clean.
Basically they’re awesome and work for a lot of different people in many different scenarios. I’ve even heard they are good for people who can’t wear rings due to dangerous conditions. They are meant to snap if caught so they won’t pull your finger into machinery.
The only things I would say against them is that they get very slippery when wet. I have to take it off before I go swimming or before a shower because I have very nearly lost it down the drain a few times. They also don’t really look like fancy rings. But they aren’t meant to. I have a few that are made to look like silver and they have fooled people from a distance but not up close. Neither of these things really bugged me though because I didn’t pay for these to look fancy and I can always buy another one if I lose it.
If you’re looking for something new give them a try. They’re comfy, stylish, and fun. I hope you enjoyed my jewelry ramble. Let me know if you’ve tried them!
